Morocco and Israel agreed to step up military cooperation by extending to intelligence and cybersecurity at a bilateral defense conference in Rabat on Tuesday, according to the Moroccan military.
The two sides “agreed to further strengthen this cooperation and expand it into other areas, including intelligence, air defense and electronic warfare,” said a Royal Armed Forces (FAR) staff member. in a press release.
The announcement follows the first meetings of the Monitoring Committee for Defense Cooperation between Morocco and Israel, which were held in the Moroccan capital on Monday and Tuesday as part of a military rapprochement between the two countries.
The meeting was co-chaired by FAR Inspector General Belkir El-Farouq and Drol Shalom, head of the Political and Military Department of the Israeli Defense Ministry.
The two companies also considered various aspects of cooperation, including “logistics, training, training, equipment acquisition and modernization,” the press release detailed.
Cooperation “of mutual benefit and based on trust and mutual support” welcomed the Moroccan Army’s number two, Belkir El-Farouq.
In November 2021, former Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz signed a memorandum of understanding in Rabat governing security relations with Morocco.
His historic visit was followed in July by former army boss Aviv Kochavi, the first visit by an Israeli chief of staff to the Kingdom of Sherifia.
Reconciliation between Morocco and Israel has accelerated since diplomatic normalization took place within the framework of the Abraham Accords in December 2020.
The settlement was viewed with suspicion by neighboring Algeria, a staunch supporter of the Palestinian people, exacerbating already high tensions between the two countries by deep disagreements over Western Sahara.
The conflict in Western Sahara pits Morocco, which controls 80% of the territory, against separatists from the Algerian-backed Polisario Front.
