A Moroccan imam accused of “inciting hatred and discrimination” has been deported from Belgium, where he took refuge after being deported from France last summer.
Hassan Ikiusen, a preacher from northern France, returned to Casablanca on Friday after the Moroccan consulate in Liège issued a pass on Thursday.
Last July, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced his expulsion, accusing him of inciting hatred and discrimination and conveying a vision of Islam that goes against the values of the republic.
However, he fled to French-speaking Belgium, where he was arrested.
After being imprisoned and briefly under house arrest, Ikiusen was sent to a safe center near Liège in mid-November after a French court in Belgium ordered a European arrest warrant procedure to fail.
The preacher has since issued several unsuccessful appeals against orders to leave the country that targeted him.
Although he was born in France, Ikiusen chose not to choose French nationality.
He claims he gave it up when he was 17 and later tried to get it back.
He has 5 children and 15 grandchildren, all French.
