AMPED hosts a year-long program called The Russell Technology Business Incubator (RTBI).
LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — On Thursday night, several minority business owners in Louisville celebrated graduating from a program focused on helping them succeed.
AMPED, a local organization that offers free music programs for kids and technology training programs for adults, hosts a year-long program called The Russell Technology Business Incubator (RTBI).
Thursday marked the second class of graduating entrepreneurs. AMPED reported that in the 2022 class he was the only two who did not complete the course.
Aaron Williams, owner of Chicago Jerk Tacos, was one of about 40 graduates. He started the restaurant with his food truck and expanded it to his brick-and-mortar store in February 2022.
“Food for me is so much more than feeding someone,” Williams said. “More than anything, it’s about connecting with people. [Cooking is] everything I’ve ever done in my life. I grew up with a single mother, so I was always with her helping out with a lot of things in the kitchen.
Passion has always been there, like a chef needs the right tools in the kitchen, but a business needs a workable plan. That’s why he applied to RTBI.
Williams said he has connections with financial advisors, lawyers and others.
“AMPED is a great program,” he said. “It’s like a best friend you didn’t know you needed.”
Now he’s focused on building a lasting legacy.
“We’re going to grow our business and still be here when I’m gone,” Williams said.
VaShaun Mosby is the owner of a women-owned tech startup and several others. She has participated in eight of her entrepreneurship programs designed like RTBI, but none have matched the amount of resources offered.
“I feel inspired. I feel empowered,” she said. “My goal is to partner with larger organizations in the city that provide social services and provide solutions to their problems.”
Classes for 2023 will start soon.
