According to the Milwaukee-Center for Disease Control (CDC), liver cancer is known to be one of the top 10 cancer-related deaths in the United States.
The Milwaukee Veterans Administration (VA) is playing a role in changing that statistic.
Research is a big part of Dr. Jeff Whittle’s career. He has been with Milwaukee VA for over 30 years and is the Director of Health Services Research.
“We are learning how to best treat the next generation of veterans,” said Dr. Jeff Whittle.
Dr. Whittle is currently participating in the nation’s largest liver cancer screening research study.
The study is being conducted at 47 VA medical centers nationwide, including Milwaukee VA.
The goal is to find out whether MRI technology is more effective than ultrasound in patients with cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver caused by a variety of conditions.
“We know this can detect this form of liver cancer early. What we don’t know is if it’s faster than ultrasound,” Dr. Whittle said.

The study will include about 5,000 veterans starting this year. Many VAs are training for this study and hope to begin accepting patients this spring or summer.
The goal is to see if we can find more answers for people with liver cancer.
“This kind of research is really important for the VA to make a huge contribution, not just to veterans, but to society at large,” Dr. Whittle said.
Milwaukee can be part of a historical research project that hopes to support veterans and their families for years to come.
