MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Alderman Mark Chambers Jr. says the shooting of mailman Andre Cross is beyond tragic.
“It was an unfortunate turn of events,” Chambers Jr. said.
The shooting occurred in Milwaukee’s No. 2 Aldermanic neighborhood, which he represents.
“I loved the man. He was a father of four. In fact, it turns out that some of his children went to the same school as my son,” said Chambers. Junior said. It is very tragic, very unfortunate, and should never have happened. ”
Cross’ death marks more than 200 murders in Milwaukee by 2022, according to city data.
Said it was a city record and city dwellers were fed up.
Chambers, Jr. said, “We’re in a crisis in the city right now, so they deserve to be disgusted.”
Mayor Cavalier Johnson agreed.
On Tuesday, he called on state and federal lawmakers to change gun laws.
“Obviously, the person trying to kill the postal worker shouldn’t have had a gun in the first place,” Johnson said. Stop and work to make sure people don’t have such access. ”
But it’s not just guns.
Spectrum News spoke with Tarsha McClain on Monday. She was friends with Cross and worked with him at the same post office.
She said it’s not common for mail carriers to be killed, but violence is nothing new.
“This is not the first time an aircraft carrier has been attacked,” McClane said.
Johnson said the murder continues to show the city needs more resources for police.
“When people call the police, I know our department works very hard to address the issue,” Johnson said. They are working diligently with the resources they have to deal with it. ”
Chambers Jr. said he understands why Milwaukee mail carriers and people living in the city want to change something.
“I have a family of mailmen. My uncle actually worked in the same garage where Andre worked. I have an aunt and I have a friend who is a mailman. I want them to know I’m with them,” Chambers Jr. said.
Both Chambers Jr. and Mayor Johnson want to remind the community to say something when they find something, even if it’s small.
Police said they were investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident and were looking for a suspect. MPD is assisting with the investigation, along with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The inspection service offers rewards of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects. They say the suspect or suspects should be considered armed and dangerous.The suspected vehicle was described as a silver Audi Q5 SUV with tinted windows.
