MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Health Commissioner Kirsten Johnson announced Monday that he will be stepping down from his duties in early March. Her resignation comes alongside news that her director of administration, Sharon Robinson, will retire in the coming weeks.
Kirsten Johnson was appointed to the position of Health Commissioner two years ago in January 2021.
“Commissioner Johnson has been instrumental in my administration. , she reorganized and revitalized the department, handled controversial issues, and managed day-to-day operations. I’m leaving.”
Kirsten Johnson helped Milwaukee navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and provide services and guidance during her tenure. She also worked on issues related to the city’s major hazard mitigation programs.
As a result of her work, officials said she has put the department on “a course for long-term stability and success.”
Kirsten Johnson said, “I have always been proud of the work of the incredible team at the Milwaukee Health Department.
She added that resigning was not an easy decision.
“Resigning from my position at the City of Milwaukee is not a decision taken lightly. I am confident in the team’s ability to continue the work of the department after my resignation.” As a professional and a resident of Milwaukee, serving the city has been the greatest honor of my career,” said Kirsten Johnson.
Prior to joining the Milwaukee Health Department, Kirsten Johnson has over 20 years of experience with several local, state, national and international organizations. This included roles as Director and Health Officer at the Ozawkey Department of Public Health, Washington, and as a Health Policy Fellow and Advisor to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Kirsten Johnson has also received numerous awards in recognition of her achievements, including the Lloyd D. Gladfelter Award for Government Innovation.
She was the fourth person in Milwaukee to undertake a major health initiative.
Officials said they were already working to fill the position.
