Milwaukee — Many are on vacation, but first responders still have work to do.
The Milwaukee Fire Department 30 crew said they could feel the spirit of Christmas in the air on Sunday.
Firefighter Dan Stroszynski celebrated Christmas with his wife and kids yesterday before he started his shift.
“It’s nice to be home with the kids,” Strozinski said. That’s what happens when you have a top priority job.”
While the crew is doing regular work such as cleaning, they are also cooking for the holidays. Firefighter Avery Konitz is preparing for Christmas dinner.
“I like working on my days off,” Konitz said. “I personally think it’s fun. When you get into the fire station, it’s like your second family. It’s like being with your family on vacation, just the other family.”
The department received several holiday treats from the community to show their appreciation for the service.
“The former crew was told they make cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning,” Kornitz said. “It’s just one of the old-school traditions. It’s just another day, and I had everything I needed to get it done, but I couldn’t be more nervous in a day.”
Station 30 answered several calls involving fire.
“There will be some more fires,” Konitz said. “People are turning on their heaters for the first time. More people are inside their homes instead of being outside.”
Avery and Dan know it’s a lot of work to do, but spending the holidays with co-workers who have become family isn’t so bad.
