Wade Miley feels healthy again and is eager to match the success he had during his final stint in Milwaukee.
The 36-year-old lefty appeared in 16 games for Milwaukee in 2018, going 5-2 with a 2.57 ERA to help the Brewers clinch the NL Central title and advance to Game 7 of the NL Championship Series. After that, they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He posted a 1.23 ERA in four postseason starts that year.
Now, he’s back on the Brewers looking to fill a spot in a rotation backed by 2021 Cy Young Award winners Corbyn Barnes and Brandon Woodruff.
“I don’t know if 2018 feels like it’s back again, but I hope we can inspire some of that magic and have another good run,” Miley said during a video conference with reporters on Monday. “We definitely have a pitching staff to work with. We have two of the best guys in baseball leading that group.”
Miley’s signature was officially announced on Monday.
The Brewers didn’t disclose the terms of the deal, but a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that Miley agreed to a one-year deal worth $4.5 million with an opportunity to earn an additional $1.5 million in incentives. The deal also has a $10 million reciprocal option for 2024, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the deal hasn’t been announced.
Acquiring Miley and Bryce Wilson, acquired last week from the Pittsburgh Pirates, added the depth of rotation the Brewers have been trying to build this offseason.
Milwaukee finished the game behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the race for the final wild card spot in the NL as the Brewers struggled to replace an injured starting pitcher. The Brewers went 13-22 last season in games started by none other than Barnes, Woodruff, Freddie Peralta, Adrian Hauser and Eric Lauer.
“Having someone like Wade Miley join us is a great, stable presence on our staff. is something we hold very dear.
Miley missed the start of the 2022 season with left elbow inflammation and also sat out with a shoulder strain.
“It was very frustrating for sure, but I feel really good now,” Miley said.
He pitched a no-hitter, went 12-7 with a 3.37 ERA and started 28 games in 2021 for the Cincinnati Reds.
Arnold believes the Brewers have plenty of options in their rotation — Barnes, Woodruff, Lauer, Hauser, Peralta and Aaron Ashby each started at least 17 times for the Brewers last season.
“Just have as many good weapons as you can,” he said. “A lot of these guys are going to start all year long.”
