OXFORD, Miss. — Winning a national championship is the ultimate goal of every college baseball program, but success in the field comes with its own set of challenges.
The Ole Miss Rebels won the first national baseball championship in school history last season, and head coach Mike Bianco spoke Friday about the challenges turning the page in media availability.
“Perhaps the most asked question since June is ‘How are you putting the championship on the back burner?'” Bianco said. “It wasn’t that hard, actually. Once you get into the first team meeting, it’s pretty easy. We have 40 players for him, and 20 of them weren’t here last year. bottom.”
After winning the big prize, Bianco and his staff made a deliberate effort to ensure that the national championship was properly recognized without losing sight of the upcoming season. This came in the form of “juggling” the championship celebrations and doing a ton of work in the off-season to have a strong run in 2023.
“Looking back at this fall, that was our goal,” said Bianco. “Now that it’s happened, how do we use this championship to improve our program, and how do we prevent it from making things harder? That’s juggling.
“Maybe the difference was outside. It was a big juggle in the fall to give the championship its due. Our season ends when school is over. Usually it’s a loss. We won the championship.” We wanted to make sure that this fall when we were able to juggle.”
Bianco believes his goal of “turning the page” was achieved this fall, with some key elements returning to the Rebels roster this season, along with some newcomers. , his team’s goal is set for this spring.
