Earlier this year, Microsoft finally added tabs to File Explorer in Windows 11 after years of insider feedback. This feature allows a user to open multiple folders and directories in one window, just like her web browser can open multiple web pages in one window.
Now that File Explorer has tabs, Microsoft seems eager to add this feature to another built-in Windows 11 app. Screenshots of an internal version of Notepad have been posted online, revealing the new tab interface within the app.
This screenshot was found in a deleted tweet by a Microsoft employee stating that the tabs feature is new. The screenshot shows a version of Notepad with a confidential warning at the top that reads, “Don’t talk about features or take screenshots.”
Like tabs in File Explorer (and most other apps with tabs), the tabs themselves appear at the top of the app, allowing users to open multiple .txt files in the same window. Assuming this feature is on track to ship at some point, a new version of this Notepad could be in preview for Windows Insiders in the coming weeks.
Hopefully, this means that this new Notepad app will officially roll out in the coming months, possibly alongside the upcoming Windows 11 Moment update. Including tabs in a notebook is a useful feature for notepad power users. Which app will Microsoft add tabs to next?
