Microsoft finally provides a workaround for Windows apps broken by buggy SQL server drivers.

Tuesday’s patch update is intended to provide security patches for Windows, but often causes serious problems as well. His November patch for both Windows 11 and Windows 10, and Windows Server caused app issues due to a bug in the ODBC SQL Server driver.

According to Microsoft, affected users will receive an app error such as “The EMS system encountered a problem” or an error from SQL Server with the message “Message: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Protocol error in TDS stream” or “Message: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Received an unknown token from SQL Server. ”

Today Microsoft finally released a workaround for this issue, but it was the holiday season in the US and many other parts of the world, so the delay is somewhat understandable. The company wrote:

Workaround: To mitigate this issue, you can either:

  • If you already use or can use a Data Source Name (DSN) in your app, install Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server and select it for use in your app with a DSN. Note: We recommend the latest version of Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server. This is because it is more compatible with apps that currently use the legacy Microsoft ODBC SQL Server Driver (sqlsrv32.dll) than Microsoft ODBC Driver 18 for SQL Server.
  • If your app can’t use DSNs, you’ll need to modify your app to allow DSNs or use an ODBC driver newer than the Microsoft ODBC SQL Server Driver (sqlsrv32.dll).

Redmond says it is working on a permanent fix for this issue.
