Last February, the TCU men’s tennis team won the ITA Indoor National Championship in Seattle. This is the first championship in the history of the program. Many of the same players on that championship team are back. The team hopes to field Natty next month in Urbana, Illinois. TCU kicked off his 2023 season with decisive wins over Abilene Christian, SMU and Tulsa last week before beginning his journey to Urbana.
The Horned Frogs are currently ranked No. 3 in the nation and were predicted to win the Big 12 Conference again this season.
The Horned Frogs returned to the purple courts at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center to host the ACU on Saturday, January 14, winning that dual 6-1. Then, on Monday, January 16, the Frogs hosted rival SMU in Metroplex and won that dual 5-0. They then traveled to Tulsa on Sunday, January 22nd to earn their first road win of the season, defeating the Golden Hurricanes 6–1.
With these three wins, TCU extended their indoor winning streak to 15 games from last season. This is the longest indoor winning streak in program history.
Highlights of these three duals are:
TCU 6 vs Abilene Christian 1 – January 14
TCU overtook ACU and took their first win of the season comfortably in front of their home crowd on 14 January. Horned his Frogs went 41-9 in the season opener, and under the head coach he went 11-2. David RodityRoditi has yet to drop a home opener since taking the helm of the program in 2010.

Securing doubles points in 3rd place, Luc Fomba When rook swan We won the set 6-4. Swann is his sophomore transferring from Wichita, Kansas via Bristol, England. Singles play – TCU win 5-1
- Second place Fonba won 6-3 6-2 to give the Frogs their first singles point. A 28th-ranked ITA singles player, Fomba extended his career singles record to 71-26.
- John, who played his first singles match in first place, won 6-3, 6-4.
- Maxted, who played in third place, took two wins, 6-4, 7-6.
- Golzny, the 2022 Wimbledon junior doubles champion, won her first singles match in three sets, 6-0, 6-7, 6-4.
- Playing in fifth place, Vibes won 6-2, 6-4.
- Swann was the only horned frog to not win a singles match, losing 2–8 in a 10-point pro set.
TCU 5 vs SMU 0 – January 16th

Double Spray – TCU Scores Points
1st place Jong and Maxted got off to a strong start with Jong’s three aces to win the first game. They won the set 6-2. Ranked 4th nationally, the pair, who ranked as the ITA doubles team, are currently 32-8 as a pair. In the second place doubles pairing, Jake Fernley, paired with Fonba, who qualified for the opening dual with an injury. The duo took the set 6-4 on him, scoring a point for the Frogs.
Singles play – TCU win 4-0
- Fonba, who was playing second, finished first and won 6-4, 6-3.
- Playing in fourth place, Maxted secured the next point in a 6-3, 7-5 match.
- Playing in first place, Jong won in duals, pushing TCU up 4-0 and winning straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
- Vibes in fifth place won 6-3 6-3 and added one more point total.
- Thomas Girowsek He did not play in the opening dual and made his season debut in 3rd place. He scored a comeback performance when he fell behind to his 5-2 in the first set, eventually winning the set his 7-6 in a tiebreak.
TCU 6 at Tulsa 1 – January 22
The Horned Frogs went on tour for the first time this season last weekend. They beat Tulsa his 6-1. TCU is now 9-4 all-time against Tulsa. And the Frogs made his 3–0 start for the third time in the past four seasons.

Fomba and Fernley, playing second, won four in a row and won sets 6-1 without incident. This duo has gone 20-5 in the last two seasons. TCU scored the doubles points with Gorzny and Vives finishing his 6-3 victory in third place.
Singles play – TCU win 5-1
- TCU won 5 of the 6 opening sets and won 10 of 12 sets overall.
- Maxted was the first to win the match, sweeping fourth place. He won 6-1, 6-2.
- Fomba won the next set 6-3 6-3 and was in third place.
- Fernley won the Frogs’ match in his 2023 singles debut with a 6-4, 7-5 win in second place after falling behind in both sets.
- Gorzny earned his first college shutout, winning 7-6 (7-0) 6-2 in sixth place.
- The match ended, but John played a set and won 6-4, 7-5.
- Vives were the only horned frogs to lose a match against Tulsa, losing 4-6, 3-6 in fifth place.
next: Horned Frogs will return indoors to the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center for the 14th Annual ITA Kickoff Weekend on January 28-29. TCU will start his two-day game against Gonzaga on January 28 at 2:00 p.m. and will face either Texas Tech or Utah on January 29, depending on the results of Day One.
TCU is one of 60 programs participating in the ITA Kickoff Weekend and one of 15 host schools. The location will be pre-determined based on his ITA team rankings at the end of 2022. The remaining 45 teams entered the Kickoff Weekend Draft in June. The draft gives the head coach the opportunity to choose the host site to which the program will move. The order of the draft is determined by year-end results, starting with the 16th ranked team.
Utah is the second seed in TCU’s quadrant. Texas Tech will be the No. 3 seed and Gonzaga will be the No. 4 seed.
