EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Conor McDavid set up a power play and a short-handed goal in the first period to score his 500th overall in the Edmonton Oilers’ 4-2 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday night. Recorded an assist.
McDavid has 500 assists in 527 games. Only five players in NHL history have done it: Wayne Gretzky (352), Mario Lemieux (433), Peter Stastney (507) and Bobby Orr (522).
Jack Campbell made 20 saves to help the Oilers (21-17-2) end a two-game losing streak and a five-game home slide. Leon Dreisaitl scored a goal and his 400th assist, Kyler Yamamoto, Dylan Holloway and Zach Hyman also scored, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored two assists.
Matthew Bazal and Cal Clutterbach scored New York’s goals while Ilya Sorokin stopped 34 shots. Islanders have dropped 2 out of 3 drops on 22-16-2.
Draisaitl opened the scoring midway through the first on a power play. McDavid sent the puck to Dry Sightl to get past a stickless Sorokin to win a one-timer.
With 1 minute and 20 seconds remaining, Yamamoto made it 2-0 with a short-handed goal. Yamamoto waited for defenseman Noah Dobson to go down before hitting Sorokin with a leg. This gave McDavid his 42nd 500 assists of the season.
