LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (WAVE) – Several students at DuPont Manual High School were honored Friday as winners of a national app development competition recognized by the US Congress.
Former Kentucky Representative John Yarmouth appeared at the school on Friday to present the awards to the four juniors who won the Congressional App Challenge.
This competition was created in 2016 to help US students deepen their understanding of computer science and STEM topics. District representatives from each state hosting the App Contest will honor the winning app in the Capitol, House of Representatives website.
Juniors Nathan Anio, Prasit Dhungyel, Sai Javvadi and Ayushi Yadav were evaluated in apps titled CrowdIt and Clouded.
CrowdIt creators Anio, Dhungyel, and Javvadi said their app will create a social media-connected experience to coordinate volunteer work in the city.
They said the app uses social scores to quantify the amount of service work users engage in.
“We think we can encourage people to do different kinds of projects and community events,” said Javvadi.
Meanwhile, Yadav’s app Clouded is used to provide mental health resources and help users deal with anxiety, depression, and other stressors, among other functions.
“There are so many mental health apps out there, but the problem is that they focus on one specific thing,” Yadav says. “One app focuses on journaling, another focuses on AI that talks to you, and another offers advice to help you. I wanted to make an app, and instead of making a subscription, I decided to just make it free, because treatment shouldn’t cost money.”
The winning student will be invited to a reception at the House of Code Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
