Manistee County — Readers were curious about the new businesses opening up in the area, but 2022 was the year many local institutions said goodbye.
In 2022, several companies with a history of nearly 100 years or more have closed or changed ownership. Among them are Wahr Hardware (108), Linke Lumber (95), Communicraft (127), and Somsel Lumber (102).
Sara and Rick Linke, former owners of Linke Lumber. Former Wahr Hardware owner Don Wahr and Somsel Lumber Dave Somsel have all announced their retirement in 2022. Linke Lumber and Wahr Hardware closed and Somsel Lumber sold to Homestead Timbers, a Marne-based company.
Manistee’s Mexican restaurant, La Riviera, will also close in 2022 after four years in business. Management announced the reopening of the restaurant, but the decision to close was met with grief and encouragement from many of the restaurant’s customers.
Other businesses closing in 2022 include Manistee Hobby, Laketown Art Manistee, which opened in 2021, and Da Jay Wok, Taqueria Diablo, which opened in February, and other relatively newer businesses in the Manistee area. Includes companies.
New business
Some business owners have chosen to close their stores in 2022, while others have decided to open operations in the Manistee area.

Scott Fraley/News AdvocateIn March, Patricia Chic, owner of Nana’s Cleaning Company, launched her second Manistee-based business. Called P&L Sammich Barista, her Mr. Shick said the restaurant was opened with locals in mind.
“I’ve always felt that businesses never serve locals, they always serve tourists,” Schick said in March. “That’s why we wanted to keep prices[affordable]because who will support you when the tourists are gone?”
Environmental consulting firm AKT Peerless Environmental Services announced that it will open a new location in Manistee in March.
The Manistee location joins other AKT branches in the Bay Area of Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Farmington, Saginaw and San Francisco.
According to its website, AKT provides “environmental, economic development, construction and sustainability services” to private and public sector clients across the country.

“Photography has always been one of my favorite art forms for many reasons,” says Griffin. “The biggest thing has to be the storytelling you can create with it. There are so many ways to tell a story.”
Griffin launched her business, Caitlin Griffin Photography, in April.
Wellnested, a new home decor store in downtown Manistee, will open in 2022.

“I’ve dreamed of opening a physical store for years,” Kiefer said in June. “What started as a creative outlet for me led me to this new chapter.”
Wellnested is a home and lifestyle store specializing in professional interior styling, home décor, furniture and specialty gifts.
18-year-old Luke Kooy opened his sports card shop, Up North Collectors Sports Cards & More, on July 1st.
Photo by Luke KooyIn just over a month, Luke Kooy went from earning his diploma from Manistee High School to opening his own card and collectibles store on River Street.
The entrepreneur already had a strong online presence among card collectors, boasting a YouTube channel with over 19,000 subscribers and an eBay store that sold over 12,000 items.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Cooey said in June. “The opportunity presented itself recently, so I decided to go for it.”
Ted Fricano is the owner of Fricano’s Manistee River at 440 River St.

Fricano owns a chain of pizza restaurants bearing his name in Muskegon and Grand Haven.
Fricano told News Advocate before his restaurant opened that he believes it sets it apart from others.
“Well, it’s 75 years old for one thing. They’re very uniform[pizzas]— all thin crust, all 12 inches. It’s simplicity,” he said.

Opening their own accounting firm has been a goal of the Longs for over a decade.
“This is fun for us. This is something we’ve always wanted to do,” said Suzanne Long. “We’ve been talking about starting our own accounting business since we met. About 15 years ago, we were talking about doing our own accounting business.”
Jamieson Hanna opened Third Life Brewing in Manistee in early November.

Hannah is from Detroit and moved to Manistee to work as a brewer.
“Third Life Brewing has been kind of a pipe dream for me for many years,” he said. “I started homebrewing many months ago, but every homebrewer’s dream is to open their own place.”
Hannah said he was the sole investor in the brewing company and now works as a brewer, bartender and janitor.
Adrean Mangiardi will provide production direction.

Filmmaker Adrean Mangiardi works on professional and personal video projects, and clients include major companies such as Google and Microsoft.
“If you need video content, you can do it,” he told News Advocate in December.
