Tacoma, wash. – A masked man robbed an elderly woman at gunpoint Tuesday night while working at a convenience store in North Tacoma.
The owner, Lakena Pong, says he used to work himself. She said her customer came to the counter with a soda, but instead of withdrawing money she pulled out a gun.
“I was scared.
Pon has owned this business for over 30 years. It’s the first time it’s been stolen. Now she no longer feels safe in the place where she watched her children grow up.
“I hope he doesn’t come back. I’m praying,” she said.
Surveillance footage captured the entire incident.
The shooter is masked, but the video shows him wearing several different identification items, including a key chain around his neck and Guess’s corduroy bomber jacket.
After robbing Pong, the suspect can be heard saying “thank you” on surveillance footage.
Surveillance video also shows the suspect running to KIA, who is waiting in the parking lot. KIA’s window appears to have “For Sale” and her 253 phone number. Also, he has at least one other person in the car.
“It’s hard. So, when I got home last night, I couldn’t sleep well,” Pong said.
Despite coping with this traumatic event, Pong returned to the store only hours later. I have no other choice.
“They’re always here. Even on holidays, she’s here. She works hard,” said Pong’s business regular Joey Hakansson.
Convenience stores are a staple of North Tacoma communities. Many shoppers, like Hakansson, were shocked and heartbroken to hear about the robbery.
“My son and I are always worried about you.
Tacoma Police are investigating.
