On Friday (January 20), the Madagascar city of Sambava was still under water.
The northeastern town was hit by Tropical Storm Cheneso. One person is missing and about 300 people have been displaced, according to the National Risk and Disaster Management Agency, according to preliminary reports. More than 700 houses were flooded. Tropical Storm Cheneso made landfall on January 19 north of Antaraha town in the Sava region on the island’s northeast coast. After making landfall, the storm moved southwest, with average wind speeds of 90 km/h and gusts of 120 km/h.
This is the first tropical storm of Madagascar’s 2022-2023 cyclone season (occurring between October and April each year).
Heavy rains and strong winds continue, but the cyclone is believed to be weakening.
