Apple’s Mac laptops, led by the MacBook Pro, have taken over as growth drivers for the company’s personal computer business.
Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) revealed the numbers through its Substack channel on January 4th. This paints a good picture of the Mac as Apple competes with his PC makers.
As of the September 2022 quarter, the MacBook Pro leads with 54% of sales, followed closely by the MacBook Air with 46%. Overall, laptops accounted for 74% of his 2022 Mac units sold, compared to the 26% figure for the desktop business, which includes the iMac, Mac Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Studio. .
In the desktop segment, iMac and Mac Pro lead with 50% and 43%, respectively, while Mac mini and Mac Studio account for only 4%.
Google’s Chromebooks lead in education, but about a third of Mac purchases are for education or students. It’s also popular with businesses, with nearly 50% of Mac buyers reporting using their new computer for business.
CIRP data show that personal use has declined slightly over the past five years, but is still primary, and education is still important, but on the decline. Its use in business has grown and is much more prevalent than in education.
Apple hasn’t analyzed the breakdown of Mac models for about a decade. It’s not exactly clear where CIRP is getting its data from.
Apple’s fourth-quarter earnings, released in October 2022, showed revenue from Macs reached $11.5 billion, with the company earning a total of $90.15 billion for the entire quarter.
