The exhibition “On the Thread”, which celebrates the diversity of embroidery and textiles, opens in Dakar on Thursday (January 12).
It is located in a space dedicated to craft and fashion launched by Chanel in 2021. In the same year, the luxury brand launched in Senegal with a collection focused on specialized crafts.
Bruno Pavlovsky, Chairman of Chanel SAS and Chairman of 19M Space, said:
“This dialogue brings together artists from all walks of life, especially those based here in Dakar. We wanted to highlight ancestral crafts such as hand, weaving and embroidery.”
19M Gallery, not far from Arasan Kone. A young Malian artist is busy working. Two of his works are on display at the exhibition.
The Needle Painter is one of the predominantly West African artists of the twenties exhibited in one of the two buildings of the Théodore Monod Museum in Dakar.
“My inspiration comes from my environment. Whenever I see someone doing something on the street, I take a picture of them, then I come back to the studio and put it on my board. Like threads, there are ties that connect us.As we mix colors, we also pull the links between the threads to paint.”
Themed tours map out Senegal’s specific skills, including a section on indigo dyes and a focus on Casamance, a region in southern Senegal that is the birthplace of the loincloth tradition of manjak weaving.
The Institut Fondamental d’Afrique noire (IFAN) hosts a series of workshops, discussions and debates on craft throughout the exhibition.
