As the founder and CEO of Hometown Lenders, Alabama’s largest independent mortgage lender, I’m always excited to hear about potential investments in my hometown. It was especially exciting to read that Lockheed and his Martin announced earlier this year about working with Airbus to build his LMXT strategic tanker aircraft in Mobile, Alabama. Establishing this production operation in Alabama confirms Lockheed Martin’s commitment that the LMXT is made in America, by Americans, for Americans.
In our 27-year history as a company, some of our proudest moments have come from supporting America’s military personnel. We have approximately 900 employees nationwide, and it is an honor to have many veteran employees. We all can’t wait for the Air Force to advance the bridge tanker race so that best-in-class tankers can join the Air Force and support aircraft flying for the U.S. Army, National Guard, Navy and Coast Guard. .
With the final KC-46 delivered in 2029, the Bridge Tanker Program requires aircraft based on existing technology to complement the Air Force’s tanker fleet to replace the aging KC-135. The bridge tanker bridges the gap as the service develops advanced aerial refueling tankers of the future. The LMXT’s capabilities far exceed the capabilities of the Air Force’s current tankers and, if competitive, would give the U.S. military the capability it needs to face its adversaries.
The LMXT is built on battle-tested technology, the Airbus A330 multirole tanker transport, which is already in service with more than 10 allies. LMXT benefits statewide, but with Hometown Lenders having a branch in Mobile, I was particularly excited to see Mobile see his third final assembly line of A330s built at Brookley Field’s Aeroplex. I’m here. This will be the first widebody aircraft to be assembled by Mobil. A third assembly line represents a $450 million investment and his direct employment of 400 people, with an average annual income of $60,000.
Alabama has proven to have a skilled workforce ready to build the best American-made planes in the world, and tankers built in Alabama that deliver on their promised But this investment in our state’s economy will depend on the Air Force advancing the tanker race. I urge Congressional delegations to continue to support free and open competition. The time has come for our men and women in uniform to have functioning refueling tankers.
