LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Having a dream of starting your own business doesn’t have to be an impossible goal. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, black business owners in the Las Vegas area said working together would take Martin Luther King’s dream to the next level.
Hasan Tesfa, 34, started his own Sea Moss Prime wellness drink business.
“Sea moss is an algae and one of many that have anti-inflammatory effects,” Tesfa said.
Growing up together in Jamaica, Tesfa said she wanted to introduce her to the Las Vegas market, but it wasn’t easy to get started.
There were a lot of “why you?” I had to establish myself, give out samples, and be consistent. We had to show where it came from and make sure it was authenticated,” he says Tesfa.
That’s where Global Warehousing came in, a nonprofit dedicated to helping other black-owned businesses like Tesfa get a boost.
“We have digital tools that allow people to access microfinance and e-commerce systems that enable people to go global,” said Operations Director at Global Soko Tommy Richardson. .
8 News Now met Richardson at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade on Monday.
“We are enabling the people that MLK called for – the world – to take their empowerment to the next level,” Richardson said.
By helping Global Soko launch his website to reach a diverse audience, he has taken businesses like Tesfa to the next level.
Tesfa said that while remembering Dr. King, he would not disrespect him.
“Towards the end of his life, he was really passionate about Black empowerment. To me, an entrepreneur, that means everything,” Tesfa said.
Global Soko has helped launch over 4,000 businesses. If you would like to learn more about nonprofits, please click here.
