Schnucks stores in Normal and Bloomington now employ members of “Flexforce,” a team of workers who select shifts as needed. It uses a system similar to popular gig work apps like GrubHub and Uber, where users can log in and select shifts and locations. They can claim open shifts and opt-in to be notified of shifts open.
Bloomington Schnucks manager Beth Dobson said it would help relieve pressure and fill gaps in the current staff. but we are making do with the current number of workers.
“The workforce has been the biggest change and challenge. We’ve never had a problem getting applicants, but it seems to be getting harder and harder now,” says Dubson. “We have to come up with these things to deal with labor shortages and things like that.”
Dubson has been with Schnucks for eight years and says the retail industry is always changing.
The trend towards on-demand work reflects how consumers and employees are spending their time.
“Given all the technology available to customers today to shop on demand via the internet or smartphones at grocery stores, it’s no surprise that this same type of technology is being extended to store employees. No surprises,” said an associate professor of business administration at Illinois State University. Nathan Hartman said. “The type of employee who can work one work schedule while using technology is the type of employee that stores hope to attract with this type of schedule.”
