Texas, United States — It’s early in crawfish season, and East Texas folks are starting to crave mud bugs, but they can cost a little more per pound, according to a few crawfish cooks.
The local business owner of Crawfish Cove and Catch Me If You Can said costs were on the rise this year, with not only crawfish prices rising, but also spices, sausages and more.
“Every week it gets a little bigger,” says Heather Goatl, owner of Crawfish Cove.
As of Wednesday, Goettle said those tiny crustaceans cost about $1 more per pound, but that won’t stop customers from buying them.
“They were happy to pay the price,” says Gettle. “But it just hurts how expensive crawfish are now.”
It’s not just crayfish that are on the rise. Amanda Longacre, owner of Catch Me If You Can, said spices and sausage prices have also increased.
“Farmers have raised prices because of the price of gas and everything they have to use,” Longacre said. I’m having a hard time, I’m usually on week 3-4 now.”
For the rest of the season, Longacre hopes pricing and sizing will improve.
“This year’s crayfish are looking good so far,” Longacre said. “So I think in a few weeks it will be a pretty healthy size and people will be able to enjoy it more.”
Goettle said Mudbug prices will probably drop next weekend, but will rise again around the Super Bowl.
Both business owners expect their customers to continue to support them.

So far, Longacre says not a single customer has complained about the price increase.
“I feel that the potions we serve people are a fair price for the quality and quantity,” Longacre said.
Longacre also said he hopes to start selling crayfish once he settles into a new building in Flint off U.S. 155. They want him to move out by February.
