Shorewood, Wisconsin — When you think of a classic barbershop, you might think of a man sitting in a large chair getting his hair cut and shaved. The art of hairdressing is an old tradition that is still alive and well.
Nick’s Barber Shop in Shorewood, Wisconsin is one that has stood the test of time. With over 60 years of history, we still have loyal customers.
Peter Balistrieri, former owner of Nick’s Barber Shop, said: “A lot has to do with tenure.”
Baristrieri sees his craft as art.

“If you’re artistic and have an eye for haircuts, it’s a form of sculpture, and it’s your business, and it’s your business like any other,” he said.
Balistrieri has worked at the Shorewood shop since 1969. At that time he was owned by Nick D’Amato. Balistrieri acquired the business from D’Amato in his early ’90s.
Now, history is repeating itself as Barristorieri handed the torch to longtime employee Roman Kontarovich.
Kontarovich came to the US from Belarus in 1993. He worked as a machinist in Milwaukee until he switched to the barber industry in his early 2000s.
He started working for Baristrieri in 2008 and acquired the business 10 years later.
Kontarovich said it wasn’t easy to get started, but the hard work and perseverance it took to get his regular customers paid off.
“It takes time. It takes a long time,” recalls Kontarovich.
“I remember myself. I was sitting here at the barbershop. I was sitting here and I had one or two people come in a day. is what I did,” he said. “If he’s here 20 years, he won’t be available for bookings, but this will take time.”
Kontarovich and his mentor have been in it for a long time. They both believe in hard work and community.
“You grow old together […] We’re here to talk about it, so that’s good,” Barristrieri said.
