Lettuce and Talib Kweli have collaborated on the first track of the upcoming Count Basie tribute album, ‘Did’t You’. late night bassie will be released on April 7th via Primary Wave Music.
A tribute album to the jazz legend who played a leading role in the development of the big band and swing subgenres, Basie’s extensive catalog by contemporary artists aims to introduce a new generation to Basie’s music. A collection of interpretations from. Among the contributors are Terrence Blanchard, Nicholas Payton, The Count Basie Orchestra (directed by Scotty Barnhart), Cimafunk, Larkin Poe, The Soul Rebels, Jazzmeia Horn, Ray Angry, Will Lee & Shawn Pelton, Jimmy Vivino, Weedie Braimah more.
“I think Basie is an artist who doesn’t mind overwhelming you with a ton of notes. first taste of late night bassie The collection’s opening track is ‘Did’t You’, a collaboration between funk band Lettuce and rapper Talib Kweli. The song originally appeared on The Count’s groundbreaking 1957 album. April in Paris.
“It’s an honor to pay tribute to a legend as grand as Count Basie,” said Lettuce drummer Adam Dietsch “When Eric Bloom and I sat at the upright piano in the living room and created the arrangement of ‘Didn’t You,’ we were almost sultry at it,” he told Consequence, who premiered “Didn’t You.” We decided to give it a relaxed and elegant atmosphere.
“I almost lost my mind when Adam Deitch asked me to help him pick a Count Basie song and ‘flip’ it!” Lettuce Trumpeter Eric “Benny” Bloom Added. “As a trumpeter, I’m a huge fan of the music of Big His Band, especially Count’s Basie’s Entire Catalog. I listened to the song all the time. Paris in April Records (where the original version of “Did’t You” came from) since I was 15.
Deitch also talked about Kweli’s contribution to Basie’s tribute. “A master wordsmith, Talib recorded highly descriptive and educational verses that encapsulated the mood of the songs, transporting the listener into a combination of both the swing era and the contemporary,” said the drummer. I got
