January 28, 2015: After threatening legal action against Birdman and Cash Money Records for failing to renegotiate their contract in December 2014, Lil Wayne slapped Cash Money Records in a whopping $51 million lawsuit in 2015.
Lil Wayne joined Cash Money Records in 1997 at the age of 14 and became a prolific rapper with the label. He was first a member of the Hot Boys before becoming a solo artist. In the late 2000s, Wayne joined Young with his Money Records launch and his two hip-hop superstars, Drake and Nicky, who became label bosses themselves with Minaj’s signing.
In 2014, Wayne kicked out Cash Money Records, accusing Birdman of sabotaging the album’s release. Carter VIt started on December 4, 2014. Weezy took to Twitter to express his dissatisfaction with Cash Money Records. His lawsuit continued the following year.
According to a Jan. 28, 2015 TMZ report, Lil Wayne claimed in the lawsuit that Birdman owed him an $8 million up front for his 11th studio album in 2013. Carter V $2 million more at the time, and after the album was completed. Additionally, Wayne also claimed that the label did not offer Wayne 49% ownership of Young Money, instead the label registered his Young Money copyright entirely under Cash Money. Wayne therefore claimed that Cash Money offered him no explanation as to how much money Drake was actually making for him on Young Money.
A legal battle between Tunechi and Cash Money Records continued for several years. Meanwhile, Wayne has publicly and musically expressed his disdain for Cash Money. free weezy Mixtape released on July 4, 2015.
Finally, on June 7, 2018, after a three-year legal battle, Lil Wayne and Birdman reached a settlement in their lawsuit. In a statement to billboard, Lil Wayne’s attorney, Ron Sweeney, has confirmed that Weezy’s lawsuit against Cash Money has been resolved, although he was barred from disclosing details of the settlement. I can say that I am satisfied,” he said. “He’s his own man, a man who owns his property, his music, and himself.” The settlement payment was rumored to exceed $10 million.
A few hours later, Lil Wayne and Birdman were spotted in the studio together. A since-deleted Instagram photo of her, taken separately by Cash Money producer D Roc, shows her sitting in front of a board and appearing to be talking to a partially blocked Baby. Weezy’s back is facing the camera. “‘Fathers are like sons.’ We shape things with words,” Rock captioned the photo.
