The Madison-Liberty Lionet Dance Team impressed their peers along with the judges at the Bama Regional Competition in Hoover, an event affiliated with the National Dance Alliance or NDA.
Dancers from many schools in the Southeast performed more than 70 routines at the competition. Lionet competed in hip-hop and won second place. Their pong her routine earned her the 1st place win.
The Liberty Lionettes include 7th grade Amiyah Cartwright and 8th grade Gabby Cole, Charlotte Davidson, Captain Addison Hankins, Brielle Hicks, Ellie Sandritter, and Lily Seay.
“Our hip-hop routines are a mix of songs from different artists. The girls do flip stunts, headsprings, kick-ups (or rising handsprings) and cartwheels,” says Courtney Cooper. Kelly said. Kelly mentors the Lionettes and teaches theater and electives at Liberty.
“Our Pomroutine is a mix of Britney Spears songs. The choreography includes pirouettes, jumps, leaps, turns and other tricks,” Kelly said.
The team hired choreographer Sarah Rush from Southern Sensations Dance Studio to create the routines. “Sarah Rush teaches the girls a routine. Before a game she practices a routine for months,” Kelly said.
Kelly is in his third year as Lionets coach. “I love it. I started coaching during the 2020-2021 school year, the height of the pandemic. I learned how to coach and my management and colleagues have been very supportive and helpful.” she said.
Growing up, Kelly was a dancer, so coaching brings back many great memories. said Kelly.
“I’m just trying to push them to improve and be the best version of themselves. Unlike other sports, there aren’t many offseasons,” Kelly said. “We’ll go to the national tournament in March, choose next year’s team in April, and the season will start all over again.”
In addition, all lionettes dance in the studio. “As their coach, I am proud of the dedication and sacrifice of them and their parents,” Kelly said.
Among other activities, Lionets dance to football, basketball halftime, Veterans Day ceremonies, pep rally, faculty/student basketball games, 6th grade orientation spectators and halftime.
