Milwaukee — The hit TV sitcom that showcased Milwaukee in the late ’70s and early ’80s is back in the headlines this week after the death of one of its leading actresses.
Cindy Williams, who played Shirley Feeney in “Laverne and Shirley,” was 75 when she died Wednesday. Her family confirmed she died in Los Angeles after a brief illness, her family announced Monday.
“Laverne and Shirley” ran in Milwaukee from 1976 to 1983.
We spoke to Milwaukee author and historian John Gulda about the impact the show has had on the city.
He said “Laverne and Shirley” was more about the characters than Milwaukee, but some scene-setters, like City Hall in the opening credits, gave the city a nod.
“Many cities never had a show. Sure, Milwaukee has very limited content, but that’s a point of pride. For a while, the most popular show on television was It’s set here,” Gurda said.
Gulda said one of the growers grew up in Milwaukee.
“He evoked his childhood, first making Happy Days and then making a spin-off, Laverne & Shirley. said.
