Kevin Ramsey, 38, Partner and Co-CEO, Advent Electric.
Entrepreneurship is in Kevin Ramsey’s blood.
He is the partner and co-CEO of Advent Electric Inc., but is also the founder of six Knoxville businesses, including several real estate companies, and an entertainment business that started out of his college dorm room at Carson-Newman University.
Despite his busy schedule, Ramsey makes time for his community. Multiple Charities In addition to participating in her events, Ramsey started the “Advent Cares” program to encourage community outreach and charitable donations to power companies.
Looking back on your career so far, what is the most memorable achievement?
Several honors and achievements, including growing the Advent Electric service business by over 500%, winning the 2021 SBA Rising Star Award, and being named a Pinnacle Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalist. I was lucky. But what I’m most proud of is that it’s self-made. I was given nothing. Having worked tirelessly on multiple jobs, grown several side businesses, and used his $500 to start a real estate portfolio with his business partners, Advent Electric and all other business activities. What was the biggest professional obstacle you had to overcome? How did you overcome it?
Navigating my business during the COVID-19 pandemic was the biggest obstacle I had to overcome.Outstanding employees, strong leadership, and [Tennessee Small Business Development Center] Thanks to you, we were able to weather the storm while all our employees continued to work. A focus on collections, repeat customers and detailed cash flow projections was key to survival and coming back stronger.
What will you focus on in 2023?
Already home to some of the best commercial and residential services sectors in East and Middle Tennessee, Advent Electric is making it bigger and better, satisfying more customers in 2023. By working with customers and general contractors who have been Advent’s trusted responders in the past, we stock more than ever before.
What is your biggest professional dream?
My biggest professional dream is to one day work with and invest in young entrepreneurs, just like my mentor did.
From which mistake did you learn the most?
As a real estate investor, I regret all the properties I gave away or didn’t buy.
what is the motive?
I am motivated by the desire to succeed, and I want to be the best I can be while taking on new challenges.
What’s the most overrated business advice you’ve heard?
“You’ve never done it” or “you have no experience in that field” rhetoric is overrated. If you listened to all the bankers and other skeptics telling you not to buy, you wouldn’t have the luck of owning the great business you have today.
What traits do you most want in your co-workers?
Loyalty. Hardworking and loyal employees are second to none.
What would you like to improve about Knoxville?
We hope that the downtown Knoxville area will grow and develop at a faster pace and become a more desirable destination for young professionals and entrepreneurs. Decreasing crime, solutions to help with the homelessness epidemic in cities are just some of the things I would like to see improved. I’m here.
