KENOSHA, Wisconsin (AP) — A Kenosha man was sentenced to five years in federal prison for knocking a police officer unconscious during a Kenosha protest over the shooting of Jacob Blake, prosecutors said. Stated.
A federal judge also ordered 29-year-old Ashton Howard last week to be released under supervision after serving three years in prison and more than $29,000 in medical bills resulting from the attack, the federal attorney’s office said. Stated.
Howard pleaded guilty last year to obstructing a law enforcement officer while he was on duty amidst civil turmoil.
On August 23, 2020, Kenosha police officers were helping remove a damaged police vehicle when Howard threw a brick at a police officer and knocked him unconscious, according to prosecutors. The officer was subsequently hospitalized.
Prosecutors said Howard’s cell phone contained a video showing a police officer being beaten with a brick, multiple stills showing the victim lying on the ground, and a “quiet” and “mouthed man.” It said it contained an emoji that read ‘close the door’.
After the attack, Howard boasted to several people that he punched the officer, prosecutors said.
Howard’s attack on the officer occurred during widespread mayhem in Kenosha after a white officer shot Blake (a black man) in the back and paralyzed him while responding to a domestic disturbance.
Officer Rusten Shesky was not charged.
