Milwaukee — The Milwaukee Police Department has a new K9.
However, this puppy is a little different than your average K9.
Being a police officer is one of the jobs that many people take pride in. This is why the Milwaukee Police Department added a new member to the team.
Officer Benjamin Ade has been with the Milwaukee Police Department for the past eight years. He recently took on a new position as wellness team coordinator.
“My role is to be the peer support leader for the team,” says Ade.
Ade is the wellness team coordinator behind K9 Crush. K9 Crush is the first therapy dog for MPD officers and staff. During her first few months at the company, she received a warm welcome from the executives.
“Anytime we go, especially after a scene or a serious incident, just having that non-judgmental, soft and friendly dog out there, you’re off the mark.
A typical day for Officers Ade and K9 Crash was to go to a particular neighborhood in the city and help an officer who had a bad phone or was having a tough day.
This is a job that isn’t overlooked, and Ade said it’s been really rewarding to be a part of it.
“It’s been a challenge to get so many requests, but the fact that I get to see her making so many people happy every day is really heartwarming,” said Ade. .
Whenever the duo set foot in the district, they receive a warm welcome. The pair recently visited District 5 and K9 Crush ran over to Officer Jocelyn Kalmanson, who had some treats for her.
Kalmansson knows firsthand what it’s like to hang out with a K9 crash after a difficult day, and has done it several times.
“It’s great because when you’re stressed, something soft and furry immediately brings you joy. It’s a proven fact. And this sweet, cuddly dog definitely helps.” ” said Kalmanson.
Ade says the joy that the K9 Crush brings is something that has not been seen in years. K9 Crush is a free service to MPD, thanks to a donation from Partners with Paws, who donated Crush to the department.
A Wisconsin-based pet food company covers her diet, and the Kewaskum Veterinary Clinic takes care of K9 Crush’s needs at no charge.
It is a group effort to provide men and women who work in the City of Milwaukee with an outlet they can use after a hard day at work.
