South Sudan’s union of journalists confirmed Friday that six staff members of the state broadcaster had been detained in connection with a video that appeared to show the president urinating on himself during an event.
The South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation footage aired in December and was widely shared online. It showed 71-year-old President Salva Kiir standing during the playing of the national anthem, looking down at what appeared to be spreading stains before the camera turned his back.
South Sudan’s Union of Journalists called for a speedy conclusion to its investigation into staff it said were in custody at the National Security Agency (NSS). In a statement, the union said it suspected staff had knowledge of the release of “certain footage”.
A call to NSS was not answered. Officials at the president’s office and the state broadcaster declined to comment.
Kiir has been South Sudan’s only president since the country won independence in 2011. The presidential election was recently postponed again, this time to late 2024, amid delays in implementing the 2018 peace deal that ended the five-year civil war.
