It’s Senior Bowl week when you get a chance to take a closer look at some of the key draft prospects for the 2023 draft. You will know more.
Speaking of mock drafts, I’ve seen a few mocks featuring Penn State players, especially in the first round. The most notable name is cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
In CBS Sports’ latest mock draft, Porter Jr. headed to the Pittsburgh Steelers in first place. Nominated 17th overall.
Let’s break this down.
First, Porter Jr. will be on the same team his father Joey Porter was on. Isn’t it a cool story!
Second, I’ve said this before. Porter Jr. to the Steelers is quite the “matchmade in heaven” pick in this draft.
why? Well, the Steelers need an identity in the cornerback room.
It’s also worth noting that the Steelers have some key corners ready for their new contract.
In addition, another starting corner, Cameron Sutton, will also sign a new contract for 2023.
The Steelers also have Levi Wallace, who is also set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2023.
So the Steelers need to start thinking proactively about the future of their cornerback room.
Bringing in a physical and athletic player like Porter Jr. would be a perfect piece in the Steelers’ secondary room with the safe Minka Fitzpatrick.
The Steelers had some talented players on defense and were ranked in the top half of the league. Bringing in Porter Jr. only makes them stronger.
Porter Jr. will also bolster his pass defense when he has to face off against players like Amari Cooper, Jamer Chase and Tee Higgins twice a year.
Porter Jr. comes in and has an immediate impact on the Steelers defense.
Porter Jr. has improved every time he stepped onto Penn State’s field, giving the Steelers the true No. 1 corner they’ve needed for so long.
We’ve seen a few mock drafts where Porter Jr. is under 20, and this is one of them to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Another great feature of the Porter Jr. is its reliability.
In 2022, Porter Jr. played in 275 coverage snaps and zero touchdowns, according to the PFF.
Joey Porter Jr. is perfect for the Steelers.
