Western Sydney First Nations Hip Hop Festival Ngana Birrung enters its second year next month with JK-47 and A.GIRL leading the line-up.
Ngana Birrung takes place over three nights at three different locations in Western Sydney. All three will be headlined by JK-47 and will also feature Keeley, Prodical 1, T Breezy and Walkerboy at the event on February 15th at the Campbeltown Arts Center.
Another event at the Rosehill Bowling Club on February 17th will feature DJ Kapital J and Keely and more to be announced. This year’s Ngana Birrung concludes next night at Penrith’s Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Center, which will also be joined by A.GIRL, Keely and Prodikal-1.
Tickets to both the Campbeltown and Penrith events are free, but tickets to the Rosehill event are $5, including the reservation fee. Find out more and get your tickets here.
Ngana Birrung – Darugu for “black star”, pronunciation Ningana Birulun – An initiative of the Parramatta City Council to “elevate indigenous artists and attract the best talent in the country”.
The first edition of the event took place last year as part of the Parramatta Nights programme, followed by Blacktown and Bankstown. Artists who have previously performed as part of Ngana Birrung include Briggs, Miiesha, DOBBY and Denni.
Parramatta Mayor Donna Davis said in a statement: “We are very proud of the Ngana Birrung concert series and excited that it has been expanded to reach a wider audience across Western Sydney. “It is important to provide a platform for developing, celebrating and highlighting incredibly talented Indigenous artists.”
After releasing their debut album ‘Made for This’ in 2020, JK-47 covered 2Pac’s ‘Changes’ for Triple Jays the following year like version, Nerve’s track ‘One in a Million’, performing in the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House at Barrabuwari, a showcase of Indigenous-led and culturally diverse music. He also won the 2021 Levi’s Music Prize and released his standalone single “Healing”.
JK-47 reappeared last year like version, joined Misha for a cover of Beyoncé’s “Freedom”. He also shared a new single titled “At One (reVision)” and detailed his sophomore studio album “Revision for Regrowth.” The album was originally scheduled for release last year, but was postponed and is now scheduled for release in 2023.
