According to Joshua “Hip Hop” Kyambo, Jay-Z once turned down a beat to Big Pun’s “Still Not A Player.”
Former Roc-A-Fella A&R recently road The podcast delves into his history with the legendary label, his work with Jay-Z, and defining the label’s distinctive production style. Hip-hop deserves credit for some of the biggest records in Jay’s catalog. Because the label’s signature sound relied heavily on his ears in production.

While sharing some stories of Jay’s studio sessions, he also dived into some of the songs he turned down. was
Hip-Hop presented the beat of “Still Not A Player” before finally reaching Big Pun’s rap. He also tried to get Jay-Z on “Oops!” It became Black Rob’s biggest hit. Finally, he revealed that he tried to get Jay-Z to rap on Mr. Cheeks’ “Lights, Camera, Action” beat.
“He said it was too late,” Hip-Hop recalled of Jay’s reaction to “lights, camera, action.”
The host then asked how he felt about the song’s success. He explained that he felt nothing about Jay lowering the beat.
“No, it’s like the best thing for the record,” he said.And I know records have to motivate [Jay-Z]”
