Jarius Bush’s journey to reunite with his long-lost brother becomes profound and poetic when he visits San Francisco in 2021. When a song about family and “finding paradise” began to take shape, the Knoxville hip-hop artist had the idea to feature the soulful voice of his friend and collaborator Alonzo Rogers in the song. But on that trip, Bush received tragic news from home: Rogers was killed at the age of 30 in a still-unsolved shooting more than a year later.

“Don’t forget[the pain]… I think that’s important,” Bush told Knox News. “So, telling that story where we remember it, we’re actually going to look at how the pain and losing him affected so many people. But reaching that joy, reaching that happiness.” .I know I’ll be back to it..that would make Alonzo proud..”
An album release party will be held at The Concourse on Friday, where Bush will also perform and share a tribute to his late friend.
“Theatrical” Knoxville Hip-Hop Project
The new album follows ‘Peach Fuzz’, the first of the ‘Full Beard Trilogy’ albums by Bush, aka J.Bu$h and member of local hip-hop group Good Guy Collective.
The album is about Rogers. But Bush said it’s also about his own siblings, the struggles his family faces, and the grieving process.
“But it also doesn’t matter how we can shape the nature of society in which things like[Rogers’ death]happen.”No one knows who did it. No. So how do we form people as well?”
Bush describes the album as “theatrical”, consisting of songs combined with interludes, voicemails and commentary that more fully portray Rogers and other characters on “The Shape-Up”.
Bush’s mom and dad were included in the casting for the album, he said, and the project also features the likes of Nora Skies and Nusense.
J.Bu$h: “I gotta let everybody know”
Rogers appears in the middle of an album of songs recorded before his death, but Bush couldn’t help but continue writing songs that complemented his friend’s voice even after he was killed.
“I’m literally trying to get out of my grief in the process of making[the album],” Bush said. “It’s like when you’re upset about something and you’re angry at someone, and you’re asked to write a letter about that person. Never send it. Just crumble it up and throw it away.”
“It was one of those deals.
When it came time to record, Bush asked Xavian Wusheng for the role that Rodgers was supposed to play. Wrushen grew up in church with the Rodgers, a soulful singer who first introduced her to Bush.
“(Rogers) has a very trained sound, so he can sing nice squats and romantic notes,” Wrushen told Knox News in 2021. And it really sounds like fire. ”
Attend an album release concert on the concourse
The Concourse doors open at 10pm on Fridays for the Album Release Party. The venue is at 4338 N. Broadway, and tickets are $20 in advance and $28 on the day.
The Good Guy Collective, Gray Jackson, The Products and DJ Emmaculant are also scheduled to perform. President Bush said the event would begin with a tribute video to Rogers.
Bush, who produced the album with Reel Division and Chicago-based Mattien, plans to tour beyond Knoxville to spread the story of “The Shape Up.”
