On this day in 2000, neo-soul pioneer D’Angelo released their second full-length studio album. voodoo Follow up on epic 1995 brown sugar LPs.
Recording sessions for the album took place at Electric Lady Studios in New York City during 1998-1999 and featured a broad line-up of musicians associated with the Soulquarians musical collective. Produced primarily by D’Angelo, his Voodoo also features Raphael Saadiq, legendary DJ Premier and Neo his soul mainstay. The album features lyrical themes regarding relationships, sexuality, growing up and fatherhood.
Armed with strong promotion and anticipated release, the album was released with commercial and critical success. Debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200, it spent his 33 weeks on the chart, selling 320,000 copies in his first week. Promoted by five singles, including the hit single “Untitled (How Does It Feel)”, the music video of which garnered D’Angelo’s mainstream attention and controversy. Critically acclaimed, D’Angelo received several accolades. It was named one of the year’s best albums by numerous publications.
