iOS 17 Feature Request: New App Library Options

The App Library was added to the iPhone home screen as part of the iOS 14 release. This feature allows the user to move the app off the home screen and leave it on the device. This was previously not possible. The App Library was a big change for the iPhone at the time, and Apple hasn’t made any further changes since.

Hopefully with iOS 17 this year, Apple will decide to extend the App Library with some additional customization options.

In its current implementation, the App Library does not offer any customizations. At the top row are the “Recently Added” and “Featured” app folders, and below that is a folder containing all the other apps on your iPhone. These folders are automatically generated by Apple, so you have no control over which apps appear in which folders and in what order.

Each of these folders also displays three large icons that can be easily accessed by tapping directly from the App Library main screen. Which icons do this? That’s up to Apple, and they’re all based on some sort of Siri intelligence system.

Not surprisingly, the intelligence system that defines app libraries can be buggy and unreliable. Apps are in random folders, and apps that haven’t been opened in months appear in the “Featured” folder. There is no way to fix these issues in the current implementation.

Hopefully with iOS 17, Apple will give you more control over your App Library in three ways. These are all fundamental demands to give users more control over their iPhone experience.

  • Rearrange the order of folders in the app library
  • Customize the 3 apps you pin to the top of your folder
  • Hide apps completely (basically some apps are only visible by searching from the home screen)

Apple has added a ton of customization options to the iPhone’s home and lock screens over the past two years, but the App Library feels very rigid. Not only can it be completely hidden, it cannot be customized to your liking.

The App Library is a great feature for organizing your iPhone’s home screen, and we hope Apple makes some improvements in iOS 17.
