When it comes to hip-hop, there’s something to be said for a genre that has stood the test of time. The 1970s marked the rise of rap and spawned a cultural movement that embraced a true way of life. As music entered an experimental era, nothing reflected the Black experience more than hip-hop. The good side, the bad side and the ugly side.
By most accounts, hip-hop was shaped by DJ Kool Herc’s famous back-to-school parties in the Bronx. The genre became increasingly popular, gaining momentum among urban youth who gathered at local block parties in New York City, and of course led to the creation of new sounds. Groups such as Gang have also started to make a name for themselves in this area. The latter is credited with introducing his first commercially successful rap song, “Rapper’s Delight”.
This was the golden age of music, a time when MCs rocked the mic to give their records new meaning. Although there is some debate as to who the true originators of hip-hop are, hip-hop’s positioning as a powerful medium in the world of music is something that is universally agreed upon. Acclaimed across the board, it turned the underground movement into a growing phenomenon. But that’s not to say it was only happening on the East Coast.
Around the same time, new ways of spinning records and dances began to emerge from the West. There were many DJs, B-Boys and MCs keeping the party alive. Most notably, duos such as Disco Daddy and Captain Rapp laid the foundation for West Coast hip-hop with the 1981 single “Gigolo Rap.” While their peers were busy peppering extended loops with chorus-less rhymes, hip-hop’s first women also played a role in making history. For example, Mercedes Ladies broke the mold as the first women-only rap group. But that’s not all.
