TIENSVILLE, Wisconsin — Inflation has forced most consumers to tighten their budgets.
Non-essential products and services are often cut first, such as a trip to the nail salon.
Bay Vongsavath owns Bay’s Nail Spa in Thiensville.
She said business is down, but she understands that customers have to take priority due to inflation.
“For our part, we try to do everything we can to get our customers back, but that’s not the customer’s priority. I want to put gas in,” she said.
Another obstacle, she said, is that many people are unemployed and others are working from home.
So you don’t have to cut your nails often for work.
Nancy Egelhoff is one of Vongsavath’s regular customers.
She usually trims her nails only for special occasions, but said she agrees that people are cutting back due to budget issues and economic uncertainty.
She said she doesn’t believe this is the end of non-essential small businesses, but believes that only the strong will survive.
Vongsavath said he wouldn’t be one of the businesses to give up, but he knows it won’t be easy.
“You get up every morning and sometimes you cry, sometimes you don’t want to be here. And that’s all I have,” she said.
She believes that if she can hold out until summer, the situation will improve.
