MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to completely close portions of Interstate 41 beginning Friday night.
Highway I-41 between Watertown Plank Road and Burleigh Street will be completely closed for 31 hours from the evening of Friday, January 6th through the morning of Sunday, January 8th. The full closure will allow for the demolition of the temporary Union Pacific Railroad Bridge. on the highway.
Traffic is diverted from the highway at Watertown Plank Road and Burley Street. WIS 100 (Mayfair Road) is the main detour route used by drivers during closures.
Drivers are also encouraged to consider alternative routes away from closures to avoid delays, the DOT said.

Sean Rice, DOT’s construction project manager, said he doesn’t expect the project to completely close the highway.
“We’ve had three weekend-type closures on this project, and this is the last of three,” Rice says. “Other than the usual nighttime closures, there is nothing during the weekends or during the day.”
Local businesses are also expected to be affected by the closure.
Thomas Warren, owner of Aliotos on Mayfair Road, said his employees travel from places like Jackson and West Bend. They need to plan accordingly to leave home early enough to be prepared for traffic jams.
Warren said this also affects potential customers.

“Once you get stuck in traffic, it’s the customer who catches you off guard,” says Warren. “There is also construction on Mayfair Road, which is a double blow.”
Between highway closures and Mayfair Road construction, he expects Saturday to be the busiest day for business.
“We have different age groups coming in, so the elderly will be stuck in traffic and the young will be in a hurry,” he said. “It’s going to be a chaotic day.”

“We cheer them up, give them good food and happiness, and make sure they feel comfortable while they’re with us,” Warren said.
DOT encourages drivers to plan ahead to consider alternative routes away from closures to avoid delays.
