Glendale, Wisconsin — Energy costs are rising for most people in Wisconsin and across the nation.
With energy costs rising and cold weather on the horizon, you may be looking for additional ways to keep your home warm when the cold weather looms.
David Meinecke is General Manager of Village Ace Hardware in Glendale, Wisconsin. When a cold snap hits, people usually rush to find additional ways to combat the cold.
“One of the biggest problems is the windows and the other is the door,” says Meinecke. “Properly insulating your windows and doors can save you a lot of money on heating costs.”
He said it’s a good idea to keep a weather kit handy on very cold days, even though it’s been a mild winter.
Installing weatherstripping or storm doors and windows will keep cold air out of your home, prevent heat from escaping, and reduce your electricity bill.
A door sweep is also an effective and easy way to keep out the cold.
Harnessing sunlight during the day can also warm your home when the blinds are open.
Meinceke says taking these additional steps will save energy costs in the long run.
“Get ahead of it,” he said. “If you insulate your doors and windows before the cold snap hits, you can beat the rush in the store in the first place, but you can also save money throughout the season.”
Whatever you do, it’s all about planning ahead for Wisconsin’s unpredictable weather.
