As history tells us, it wasn’t until 1984 that the Soviet Union announced its boycott of the Olympics. Whether the reasons are political or not, this meant that a very large part of the competition – the one poised to take on the US as its main rival – was now non-existent. He literally won gold and won 174 medals during the Olympics.
This was great news for the United States, but remember McDonald’s promise. Every time the United States won a medal, customers got free food, and people were ready to cash in on that promise. Hungry customers flocked to the local McDonald’s. The number of people redeeming the cards was so high that in 1984, The New York Times reported that 6,600 McDonald’s had virtually run out of Big Macs to satisfy their starving crowds. When Americans across the country cheered for America’s overwhelming victory with french fries full of french fries, McDonald’s realized that they basically raked in free food and didn’t make any profit from it.
McDonald’s never disclosed the exact amount of the loss, saying only that although the promotion was a huge success, it was the most costly, the Los Angeles Times reported.
