Aaron German said it was the second time in just six months that his business had been targeted.
HOUSTON — A local business owner said thieves were caught on camera stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of copper in southeastern Houston, causing power outages for several days.
Aaron German, owner of a local state farm business, said it was the second time his business had been targeted in just six months.
He hopes someone can recognize the thief to help the police catch him.
“Very frustrating,” German said.
Two days after a thief stole $30,000 worth of copper, his business was still out of the lights.
Jarman said he received a mobile phone notification Wednesday morning that 5% of customers in the area were without power.
“When I went to watch our video, I saw that the Wi-Fi was all down. Then I knew,” he said.
He said the same thing happened in June, but this time his surveillance cameras had backup batteries to capture the thieves’ activity.
German believes the same person is responsible for both thefts.
“There were two individuals that you could tell by the way they walked, the way they walked, the way they came out. They knew exactly what to do and where to go.”
A CenterPoint spokesperson told KHOU 11 that wire thefts are on the rise at their utilities and other businesses across the country as the value of copper and other metals rises.
Not only are thieves at risk of being electrocuted, Centerpoint officials said: “
CenterPoint said it plans to reconnect the service once German has had a qualified electrician replace and repair the wires.
Germans estimate that the repairs will cost more than $55,000 in total.
KHOU 11’s Adam Bennett asked him if he had a message for the person in charge.
“This time around, we’re getting more attention by publishing this or your video. We’re here for you,” German replied.
The Houston Police Department is investigating the theft. Anyone with information should contact HPD at 713-884-3131.
