HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – The Houghton Business Association, which met this morning for its first meeting of the new year, sat down to discuss future plans and projects for the near future.
Among the topics discussed, Mayor Eric Waara said East Lakeshore Dr.
“We’re shooting in late March/early April, so hopefully by the time summer hits, we’ll have the extensive demolition work completed by Memorial Day,” Waara said. You can start working.”
Waara said it would take demolition crews six to eight weeks to remove the deck. They depart from the eastern section that runs along the Portage Lake District Library.
“Then, ‘They’ll start improving the surface, installing sidewalks, working on the green space. We’ll do a little bit of utility work, but it’s not like a traditional utility project.'”
Remaining spaces include additional parking and pedestrian spaces such as lawn areas and gardens.
Another topic brought up during the conference was the return of the Jiva Jabba Snowboard event after a hiatus of over a decade.
Installed in part by Rhythm Bike and Board Co., the event turns the lower half of Huron Street into a snowboard terrain course.
Fifteen to twenty talented snowboarders from the Midwest will perform in front of an audience and compete for $1,000 in prizes in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
“Part of Shelden Avenue here will be closed to traffic for safety,” said Jenn Reed, Rhythm Bike and Board Co. operations manager. “And I hope the course continues all the way to our jetty.
However, some still have the opportunity to use it.
“We are pushing for the community to be able to ride the next day,” Reid continued. “A waiver will be required to be signed, but we will only publish it for a specific period of time that we will inform you as the event approaches.”
Jiva Jabba is scheduled for Saturday, February 18th at 6pm
