Hobart, Wisconsin — The highest point of the nearly completed printer is a few feet above Matt Delvaux’s head.
Building such large machines is one of the attractions of the electromechanical assembler’s job at EMT International in Hobart.
“People have asked me what I do. I build wide web machines and they print everything,” says Delvaux. “Your books on Amazon, your labels on pretty much everything you touch.”

The production point where Delvaux adds the main pneumatic panel is quite far from where the machine starts.
“You look at it from a bare frame and draw conclusions from it,” he said. “It’s really cool to know that you’ve actually put your hands in it and created something that actually works.”
EMT has about 20 vacancies ranging from assemblers to machinists to electrical and software engineers.
Mark Weber, EMT’s vice president of business excellence, said machines made by EMT produce the labels, packaging and other products that consumers touch every day.
This includes everything from beverage labels to direct mail to bank checks.
“U.S. postage stamps could have been made on a machine that we built recently,” he said. “If you ordered a packet of photos on Shutterfly, it may have been sent through our machine.”

Tim Hatch started working for EMT in March as a temporary employee. He now works full time as an electromechanical engineer.
“I went through a convention in Chicago. I can,” he said. “My kids ask me all the time, What do I do? I build machines that keep the world running. They like it.”

Human resources manager Kari Brunett said the company values employee development.
“You can’t grow as a company if you don’t grow your people,” she said. “It’s a big focus of who we are and what we do. We are focused on how we can help.”
Brunett said the company has already booked business for the new year.
Delvaux said it’s satisfying to see the machine in action.
“It’s easy to forget that it all started with nothing,” he said. “Before working here, I didn’t make many things from scratch with my own hands. Here, I do it every day.
