Sumino watched the packed crowd gathered in front of him at Oakland’s Fox Theater on Saturday night and tried to gauge how many newbies were in the mix.
“If this is your first time seeing Sumino live, make some noise,” instructed the St. Louis native.
And it actually made a lot of noise.
But Smino still wanted to know more.
“If this is the last time you see Sumino live, make some noise,” he said.
And, as expected, the reaction was much quieter. (Some of the house party people were still happily making noise, but it was Saturday night and they were just ready to yell.)
Yes, hip-hop fans should expect to see more of Smino, whose career is really just beginning to blossom after years of stepping into position to successfully position himself in the industry.
The same can definitely be said about Atlanta rapper J.I.D., who co-headlined Sumino on this Luv Is 4Ever North American tour.
The pairing has proven to be a strong draw nationally. Especially at Fox, where J.I.D. and Sumino were scheduled to pull another full house on Sunday.
“Thank you for selling out this (expletive) two nights in a row,” JID told the crowd on Saturday.
It’s easy to see why it was so difficult to find tickets to the Bay Area Stand. It looks like potential buyers will outnumber sellers outside of Fox on Saturday, as the show features two rising stars in the hip-hop game.
JID and Smino, both in their early 30s, are touring in support of their third full-length studio album and seem poised to take their careers to the next level. They are incredibly talented rappers, and their show on Fox shows that they have built a strong bond with their fans over the years.
Smino is the first of the two rappers to take the stage, standing in front of a backdrop of two big hearts. Hearts were used as video screens to show what was happening on stage and other images.
Like J.I.D., a member of hip-hop supergroup Zoink Gang along with Buddy and Guapdad 4000, Smino described how smooth-flowing and Show off your stage knowledge. Noir”) and the non-album single “Rice & Gravy”.
“If you come to the party, say so!” Smino shouted.
The crowd was definitely in the party mood as Sumino continued with fan favorites like “Z4L” (also from “Noir”) and “Netflix & Dusse” (from 2017’s debut “blkswn”). It bounced energetically in the area. He also touched on many tracks from his latest album, his 2022 Luv 4 Rent, including “90 Proof” and “Blue Billy.”
JID’s set was at least as impressive when he focused on one of the best hip-hop albums of 2022, his latest full-length, “The Forever Story.” In particular, “Bruddanem” and “Kody Blu 31” – his two standout tracks from the album – were true highlights of his set.
The jazzy “Workin Out” from his 2018 sophomore work “DiCaprio 2” proved to be an excellent showcase for his smooth vocal work. He then went the other way, burning out the lyrics while rapping “Off Deez” from the same album at lightning speed.
All in all, Luv Is 4Ever proved to be a great doubleheader, featuring two hip-hop talents that we’re sure to hear more of in the years to come.
