Hip-hop and classical music ready to hit the stage together at San Pedro Creek Culture Park

On Saturdays, San Pedro Creek Cultural Park near the Alameda Theater brings unique musical creativity to life.

Konshens hip-hop artist MC has created a very different way to get his message across by combining two musical worlds.

“The fusion of hip-hop and classical music is nothing new,” Konshens said.

At school I was trained to play the piano, clarinet and drums. Now he has formed a band of his seven classical musicians, which he calls “Classically Dope”.

“I’m really, really excited to introduce people to something that I know will ultimately change people’s minds in a positive direction,” Konshens said.

That positivity comes through his music, from the themes he tackles to his live streams.

“I think it’s actually my intentional mission. Under this Classically Dope umbrella, I believe music is one of the most powerful ways of communication,” he said.

One of the life events that inspired him was the birth of his son.

“My son Nathaniel has saved my life in many ways. Having a son has given me a lot of structure,” Konshens said. “And it put me in a place where I realized, ‘No, this life you’re living right now isn’t just yours anymore.'”

MC Konshens will be playing in San Antonio this weekend as part of DreamWeek.

“I ask all of you who come to enjoy this show to come with an open mind, because… when people think of classical music, they think of it in boxes,” he said. “When people think about hip-hop music, they think about it in a box.”

He and Classical Dope perform genre-crossing music across San Pedro Creek from the Alameda Theater on the site of the preserved St. James AME Church.

“I think the history behind it and its church and establishment is going to be an interesting but very spiritual moment,” he said.

Konshens and Classically Dope will perform Saturdays at 2pm and the concerts are free.
