Here’s a recap of the high school varsity action starting Friday, December 30th.
Mount St. Joseph 60, St. Stephens & St. Agnes (Virginia) 58: At the Governor’s Challenge at the Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury, UMBC’s Ace Valentine hit a deep 3-pointer with 7.6 seconds left in regulation to push Gales (12-2) past the Saints. Mount Saint Joseph beat Pittsburgh Central Catholic, Pennsylvania, 61-46 on Thursday, and he won 2-0 in the tournament.
Pittsburgh Central Catholic (PA) 80, John Carroll 74: Randy Wilkerson had 30 points and Dante Depante had 15 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals in the Governors’ Challenge as they defeated the Patriots 4-9. John Carroll has lost his last five games.
Calvert Hall 63, St. John’s Catholic Prep 55: Brendan Johnson scored 29 points, including 6 of 9 from a 3-point range, to lead the Cardinals (8-7) over the Vikings (5-6) in the Governors’ Challenge. The score was tied 29-29 in the first half.
Carravel (Dela.) 57, Gilman 42: At the Governor’s Challenge, John Clemons had 34 points and 10 rebounds to defeat the Buccaneers over the Greyhounds (1-5). The game was tied at 24 points at the end of the first half.
John Carroll 40, Fallston 27: Piper McCue earned MVP honors and the Patriots defeated the Cougars in the All About the Girls Holiday Hoops tournament.
Howard 43, Mercy 39: The Lions scored a come-from-behind victory (8-3) over the Magic in the All About the Girls Holiday Hoops tournament. Mercy started the third quarter with her 21-10.
Chesapeake-AA 42, Catonville 40: At the All About the Girls Holiday Hoops tournament, Kasey Slade had 12 points and 15 rebounds while Ava Arruda had 10 points and 4 steals to give the Cougars a 7-1 lead. Asanioffer scored 13 points and Alexis Johnson scored her 11 points at Catonsville.
Pikesville 54, Padua Academy 27: Jayda Mayles led Pikesville with 14 points, while Darielle Weems and TyKeisha Hill scored 10 points each.
Annapolis 52, Maryvale Prep 42: The Panthers built an 18-7 lead in the first quarter. Kiamiani Scott led the win with 30 points and 10 rebounds. Mackenzie Fuller recorded his 13 points, eight steals and four assists.
