This year, the Chicago Drill reached a big milestone. December 18 marks the 10th anniversary of Chief Keef taking the world by storm with the release of his major label debut album. Rich at the endthe giant that gave us the controversial “3 Hunna” and genre-defining classics like “Love Sosa” and “I Don’t Like” featuring Lil Reese.
But lately, local rap is going through a period of transition. Many of the food stars have passed away in recent years, like FBG Duck and King Von. As a result, its sound is a bit stagnant. Rappers like Taylor Bennett and Kidd Kenn have defied genres and pushed boundaries, both musically and commercially. Also, new rappers such as Fastmoney Ant, DCG Brothers and PGF Nuk are exploding as the city grasps its future rap identity.
Meanwhile, local R&B continues an upward battle for national relevance between urban and alternative spaces. Unlike rap, R&B seeks ways to market itself beyond traditional means. Both genres have people vying to be game changers in Chicago. For example, they have produced some of Chicago’s most progressive R&B, including Johari Noel and Chanel True.
Meanwhile, G Herbo, Lupe Fiasco, Tobi Lou, Dreezy, Ric Wilson, Saba, Kaina, Ravyn Lenae and Lil Durk have had the biggest years of their eventful 12-year careers. Several of them have made it into the top 10 of Billboard 200 and Hot 100 lists.
To highlight the depth of Chicago music this year, tribe wrote Chicago’s first top 25 hip-hop and R&B albums of 2022 — let’s be honest, making this list wasn’t easy. We’ve meticulously curated, watched, and listened to nearly 40 albums from Chicago’s hottest local and globally recognized talent. [Reporter’s note: all December releases will be considered for 2023].
We considered artists from across the Chicagoland area as well as those with deep ties to Chicago culture. When it came to rappers Freddie Gibbs and Sumino, the debate raged. Both are from different cities in the Midwest. Gibbs calls Gary, Indiana, his home, and Sumino is in charge of his birthplace in St. Louis all day. However, although we did leave Gibbs off our list, we gave him the title of “honorary Chicagoan” in the Honorable Mentions section because of his proximity to the Chicago music scene when Gary wasn’t on the national radar. Smino has its roots at Chicago-based Classick Studios, and having lived in Chicago for years, we left Smino on our list.
